(KNSI) – It’s easy to get distracted making dinner, but firefighters say while you’re keeping an eye on the kids or the TV, keep a closer eye on the stove.
St. Cloud Assistant Fire Marshal Greg Adamietz says when it comes to the leading cause of house fires, “Kitchen fires are still number one and then followed up by improper disposal of smoking materials.”
This week marks the 100th National Fire Prevention Week.
St. Cloud Fire Chief Matt Love says most people start fires while cooking because they forget something is on the stove or fall asleep.
Love has some advice to avoid starting a fire in the kitchen. “We’ve taught people to put the pot holder in their hand when they walk around. Keep it in your hand as a reminder you’re cooking something. And in our elderly populations that’s a really handy tool.”
Other leading causes include candles and animals knocking over space heaters.
