(KNSI) – Republican lawmakers are demanding U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack turn over documents related to the Feeding Our Future scandal by Halloween.

Signing the letter were Michelle Fischbach, Tom Emmer, and two other Minnesota congressmen, plus others. The letter seeks communications from USDA officials showing how the agency monitored the Child and Adult Care Food Program and Summer Food Service Program for potential fraud.

It notes that Feeding Our Future and its affiliates received over $200 million in 2021, up from $3.4 million before the COVID-19 pandemic. The letter says it remains unclear that USDA and the Minnesota Department of Education attempted to prevent the largest fraud in state history from occurring.

The representatives say the conspiracy, “appears to have started around the time of the increased flexibilities provided by USDA and Congress in the wake of the COVID pandemic.” They are seeking “all documents and communications relating to any actions taken or planned by USDA to establish additional integrity measures designed to prevent against fraud and improper payments.”
