(KNSI) — A Big Lake native serving at Stennis Space Center is talking about his experience and praising his hometown for giving him a great start.
U.S. Navy Ensign Austin Abbott, who graduated from Big Lake High School in 2013, is a meteorology and oceanography officer with Naval Oceanography at Fleet Survey Team, collecting, measuring, and analyzing elements of the land, air, sea and space. That information is then synthesized with oceanographic and meteorological data to create forecasts and warnings supporting flight safety and navigation.
Abbott says, “Big Lake taught me to appreciate a small community. The oceanography community is very small within a large Navy.” There are 55 military members and civilians who serve on FST.
Abbott earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and his master’s degree from Old Dominion University. He also graduated from Officer Candidate School, which he calls his “biggest accomplishment in the Navy thus far.”
He continues to train and perform missions and adds, “Serving in the Navy is a way to give back to a country that has given me so much.”
