(KNSI) – The first frost of the year was right on time in central Minnesota, which should help spur changes in the leaves.
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources color predictor Val Cervenka says, “Weather is really the biggest factor in determining fall color.” Right now, things are behind schedule, especially for our region.
According to the DNR weekly report, fall color from Sherburne County through Saint Cloud and over to Monson Lake State Park is still under 10% of peak color. It is the only area in the state that remains almost exclusively green.
In a normal year, we would be seeing peak fall color within the next week. Cervenka says, “Fall colors are best when days are sunny and nights chilly. A cold snap will help speed up color change in leaves.”
Most of the northern half of the state is nearing 50% of peak. Foliage in Big Island State Park near the Iowa border has progressed the furthest.
