(KNSI) — CentraCare Health’s St. Cloud Hospital could become a place where future doctors come to learn.

During Monday’s St. Cloud City Council meeting, Councilman Steve Laraway said officials are looking at establishing a medical school in St. Cloud. Laraway also serves on the hospital’s board of directors and says he thinks it could be “hugely transformational for the whole city. It’s a joint venture with a grant program with the University of Minnesota.”

The plan is subject to approval by the board of regents and other regulatory institutions. Laraway says a medical school can help fill the regional medical worker shortage because “What they found is when you have a school many of the physicians that are trained there stay there. We’re short, I think over 1,000 employees right now, at CentraCare.”

He says the medical school would involve clinical teaching and research.
