(KNSI) – Experts say there is plenty of work to do in the fall to prepare your yard for spring.
Tom Woods, owner of Woods Farmer Seed and Nursery in Waite Park, says getting your lawn aerated and seeded in autumn is critical. He says it’s about time to get it done with cooler weather on the way.
“As we go into later September and into October, the root system will start growing more actively at this time of the year. So, that’s why you want to aerate. People need to start thinking about it very soon.”
After your lawn is seeded and aerated, he recommends putting calcium on it. Fall is also a great time to get rid of weeds because the colder weather will help herbicides do their job.
“Weeds are still active there but they will take in a lot of the herbicide a lot easier. You can apply now or even after the frost to try to get rid of some of those weeds. Your good grass can still fill in through the month of October itself.”
Tom says it is too late in the year to prune plants. He says to wait until they go dormant in November or December. The garden pro says bulbs for flowers like daffodils, hyacinths and tulips.
