(KNSI) – Law enforcement is stepping up patrols next week, focusing on seatbelt usage.
Click It or Ticket campaigns have become common over the past couple of decades. They often feature media blitzes, along with checkpoints and other targeted actions to get people to buckle up. The statewide campaign is coordinated through the Department of Public Safety. It runs from the 18th through the 24th.
110 unbelted motorists died in 2021. That is up from 73 in 2019, before the pandemic. So far this year, the numbers are trending back down. Through September 11th, 53 people have died without a seatbelt on. At the same time a year ago, it was 72.
The number of severe injuries from car crashes has dropped by 3,000 since 1987, close to 75 percent, as seat belt compliance rose dramatically. It helps adults and children. When young kids under the age of seven are properly restrained in a car seat, crashes rarely lead to significant injury. 97 percent of the time they will escape harm or have only minor bumps and scrapes.
