(KNSI) — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety says drunk driving arrests increased more than ten percent from last year during extra summer patrols.

During the Labor Day DWI campaign, which ran from August 19th through September 5th, almost 300 law enforcement officers from agencies around the state arrested 1,265 drivers for driving impaired compared with 1,145 DWI arrests during the same period in 2021.

Some of those arrests included a driver found passed out in a running vehicle in the middle of a parking lot in Annandale. Police say they believe the driver passed out while backing out of the parking space. Big Lake police arrested a driver for DWI after the person crashed into a home. The Chisago County Sheriff’s Office arrested a driver for DWI after they rolled their car with a 2-year-old inside. The child wasn’t hurt. Twelve drivers arrested had a blood alcohol content of over .3%, with the highest BAC reported by the Mankato Department of Public Safety Police at .36%. The legal limit for driving is .08%. Nine drivers refused to be tested.

The St. Cloud Police Department had the fourth most arrests for greater Minnesota at 23.
