(KNSI) – As another school year gets underway, law enforcement is renewing their call to be on the lookout as buses hit their annual routes.

Captain Jon Lentz of the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says motorists need to recognize that fact and realize it poses some potential risks.

“You may encounter a bus driver who is new to the route or new to bus driving. Various things that might add to, perhaps, the stress of their job as well.”

Lentz says the department cites motorists each year for violations, with certain times of the calendar being busier than others.

“Certainly in the fall, when everybody gets used to buses being back out there again. Over the course of the winter once it starts to snow, people are a bit more cautious to begin with, but then come springtime again, we end up getting a few citations issued at that time of year once the roads are free of snow.”

He says another issue that causes confusion is what to do when driving on a road with a median. Opposing traffic is not required to stop when the lights on a bus begin to flash and the arms extend in that circumstance.
