(KNSI) – Government offices will be closed on Monday to celebrate the American worker. Monday is Labor Day.

St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis says it’s good to take time off to pay tribute to the people who built this country.

“Unlike other holidays, it’s actually a good day to have a day off in a holiday because of the work that so many men and women. The folks that have built this nation that built our roads, our buildings, our industry, our businesses, we honor their sacrifice, their work. For those of you who are in that workforce. For those of you who have retired and may have helped build our communities, our state and our nation. We honor you, and we thank you.”

The first Labor Day holiday in the united states was celebrated on September 5th, 1882, in New York City.
