(KNSI) — The Local Education and Activities Foundation is once again asking parents, families, community members and business owners to help out and adopt a classroom for the upcoming school year.
LEAF Executive Director Bruce Hentges explains that teachers spend hundreds, sometimes even thousands of dollars of their own money to make sure their classrooms are stocked and the district doesn’t always have extra supplies on hand, so that’s where LEAF comes in.
LEAF asks donors to give $250 per classroom to provide supplies for a full school year. Hentges says it started out as a program aimed at student families and business owners but has caught on community-wide. He says the funds are sometimes spent on markers and more traditional materials. Other times, it is a bit more exotic.
“The one that really struck me is food for the snake in the biology lab at the high school.”
To adopt a classroom, donors are responsible for earmarking $250 for the academic year. Donors can also give and tell LEAF where to direct the money and then teachers apply for the grants. Hentges says it won’t completely fill the hole in a teacher’s budget, but they are very appreciative of the assistance.
The $2 million fund is able to award grants of around $100,000 in improvements each year.
