(KNSI) – Two years after Minnesota closed schools in the face of the pandemic, area districts are showing a slight improvement in math and reading but continue to slip in science.
According to data released Thursday by the Minnesota Department of Education, all area districts continue to show considerable gaps in proficiency on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment tests compared to before the pandemic.
St. Cloud Area School District Superintendent Laurie Putnam says the numbers show they have a ways to go before they are where they want to be.
“We know that we have work to do. We owe our students and we will provide our students with a top notch education.”
She says it is a challenge when some schools have almost 90% of the kids qualifying for free and reduced lunch. She says the district will continue to work and improve its scores.
“Are we making growth? Absolutely. Does the MCA test monitor growth? Absolutely not. It is a dipstick of what one particular child knows on one given day.”
