(KNSI) – The Minnesota State Fair opens this morning and the fish pond is sure to be one of the most popular stops for attendees. Genevieve Furtner is a hatchery manager with the Department of Natural Resources. She says there are plenty of species in the pond worth your attention.
“So, we’re hoping that people will come and check out the pond. And maybe learn a thing or two about some of the fish we have in Minnesota. We have a lot of really cool fish in the state. At the pond here we’ve got gar, sturgeon, muskie, everything else in between.”
Muskies average up to four feet in length. Lake sturgeons are another giant fish you will have the opportunity to see up close outside the DNR Building.
Furtner talks about the education sessions happening at the pond.
“Catch a Pond Talk, which happen at the :45 every hour and last for 15 minutes, and learn a thing or two about the fishes we have.”
The pond is stocked only with fish native to Minnesota.
