(KNSI) — Funeral arrangements are set for Senator David Tomassoni.

The 69-year-old died due to complications from ALS on August 11th.

Visitation for the public will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisolm on Thursday, August 18th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and another on Friday, August 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A funeral mass will follow that at 11:00 a.m. He will be buried in a private ceremony in the Chisolm cemetery.

Tomassoni grew up in Chisholm and played hockey at Chisolm High School. He also played professional hockey in Italy, where his ancestors were from, and represented the country in the 1984 Olympics.

He revealed his ALS diagnosis last summer and said he had been feeling the effects of it during the legislative session. Initially, he said he wouldn’t tell anyone, but “dealing with it upfront and becoming an advocate seems to be the right direction to go.”

In the last session, the Minnesota Legislature passed $25 million in funding for ALS research and caregiver support. At the signing ceremony, Tomassoni said the money was about improving the future, and “we can all be proud of that.”

Before being elected to the state Senate in 2000, he served in the House of Representatives starting in 1992.
