(KNSI) — Former State Senator David Tomassoni has died.

Tomassoni had been diagnosed with ALS.

His legislative assistant, Laura Bakk, announced on Twitter Friday morning.

Tributes are pouring in praising Tomassoni for his kindness, bipartisanship, and vigorous representation of his district on the Iron Range and defense of mining jobs in that area. Before being elected to the state Senate in 2000, he served in the House of Representatives starting in 1992.

“David was everyone’s friend,” said Senator Scott Dibble. Former Republican Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch said, “This morning, I’m thinking of Senator David Tomassoni and the terrible loss of a leader, father and friend. It was an honor to serve with someone of his caliber.” Minnesota Twins President Dave St. Peter chimed in, calling the news incredibly sad, adding, “Senator Tomassoni was a legislative GIANT, a true statesman and a high-character human being. God Bless the Tomassoni family and friends.”

Republican candidate for governor and former State Senator Dr. Scott Jensen praised Tomassoni, saying, “Bigger-than-life spirit. Bigger-than-life service. A life incredibly well lived. I am a better person having served with Senator David Tomassoni, and I look forward to the day I commune with him once again.”

Republican Senate Majority Leader Jeremy Miller issued a statement Friday morning saying, “I am deeply saddened by Sen. David Tomassoni’s passing. David was a wonderful colleague, friend, and mentor not only to me, but to so many at the Capitol. It was an honor to work with him on the funding of ALS research this past session. I am hopeful the funding from this bill will help find a cure for ALS and honor David’s legacy. Janel and I send our condolences to the Tomassoni family during this difficult time.”

Tomassoni grew up in Chisholm and played hockey at Chisolm High School. He also played professional hockey in Italy, where his ancestors were from, and represented the country in the 1984 Olympics.

Last session, the Minnesota Legislature passed $25 million in funding for ALS research and caregiver support.

At the signing ceremony, Tomassoni said the money was about making the future better, and “we can all be proud of that.”

He was 69.

Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan shared the following statements after the death of longtime Iron Range legislator Sen. David Tomassoni.

“Gwen and I are heartbroken to hear of Senator David Tomassoni’s death. We are sending love and strength to his family and so many friends at the Capitol and across the state,” said Governor Walz. “David was a champion for his constituents, the Iron Range, and all of Minnesota. I am honored to have known him and to have worked together to pass millions of dollars in funding for ALS research and caregiver support last session. His legacy will continue to help people in Minnesota for generations.”

“Senator David Tomassoni was a tireless advocate for his constituents and the Iron Range and a friend to so many across the state,” said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. “When he was diagnosed with ALS, he turned heartbreak into action and became a fierce champion in his final months for people and families like his. I am saddened by his passing, and his family and loved ones will remain in our thoughts and prayers.”
