(KNSI) – Albany baseball is Youth World Series bound!

The 15-and-under squad will have its first game in pool play in Virginia on Saturday. Coach Grant Johnson says his roster looks different than most of the opposition they’ll see.

“These are all Albany area kids. Albany, Avon, St. Martin, Farming. So, all in our Albany School District, which is very unique because we’ll go out there, and probably all of the other teams will be essentially all-star teams, where they take from a big area.”

Johnson says his squad has been performing well for weeks just to secure a spot in the national bracket.

“It started with a state tournament in about mid-July, which we actually finished runner-up to Fergus Falls. But two teams advanced to the regional tournament in Rapid City, and that was South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas…Nebraska. And we finished runner-up to Rapid City.”

The program has been to the Youth World Series twice before, finishing in the Top Four each time. Johnson says he has told his players the lights won’t be too bright for them to have success.

Johnson also wished to extend a huge thank you to the program’s supporters.
