(KNSI) – St. Cloud area accountants remind parents to think about tax season as they pick up school supplies.
Landwehr Tax and Accounting Business Manager Ashley Kerzman says almost everything on a school supply list will be a tax write-off, so parents should save the receipts for things like pens, pencils, notebooks, calculators and even electronics.
“If you’re buying a new computer to use for school purposes. Absolutely, save those receipts. Whether it’s for college, grade school, or high school, you absolutely can use those as deductions.”
Kerzman says it’s essential to keep receipts no matter your income bracket.
“All of these deductions are Minnesota state deductions. You’re not going to get the deduction on the federal side. So, whether you itemize or not, the chances of you benefiting at least a little bit by saving these receipts is definitely worth checking out.”
Kerzman says some typical school-related deductions parents forget include gym shoes and driver’s education. You can also get some tax credits if you pay tuition at a private school. Click here for more school-related tax breaks.
