(KNSI) – Kids will have a chance to channel their inner Indiana Jones at the Stearns History Museum on Thursday. Program Director Caitlin Carlson says the History Outdoors: Dig Like Archaeologists event introduces kids to the scientific field in an exciting way.
“They test their observation skills, which is a lot of what archaeology is. And then at the end, we have these little mini tubs filled with sand and they do a little miniature dig for artifacts. There are some fun things in there for them to find.”
The kids will be able to bring home what they uncover. Carlson says the goal is to help inspire the next generation of archaeologists.
“It’s important as historians to teach them what archaeology is because archaeology and history go hand in hand. History is the written record. Archaeology is what humans leave behind. It’s just a way of giving them a taste of that. And if it’s something they’re interested in, theoretically, they’ll keep pursuing it as they get older.”
The dig takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $3 for kids unless you’re a museum member, then it’s free. Kids can get registered online or by calling the museum at 320-253-8424. Families can also show up on Thursday morning for the event.
