(KNSI) – Deer hunting tags went on sale in Minnesota on Monday, the same day the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources released its deer hunting regulations for 2022.

The DNR has increased limits in 28 deer permit areas and decreased limits in 12 locations. Bag limits in the state’s other 90 deer permit areas remain the same. Firearm and muzzleloader hunters who want to take a doe in a lottery must buy a license by September 8th. No application is needed to take antlerless deer in a permit area where hunters can take a deer of either sex, a two-deer limit, three-deer or five-deer limit.

To slow the spread of chronic wasting disease, samples are mandatory in all CWD zones during the opening weekend of firearms hunting.

To help, officials launched a new sampling program. Hunters can submit samples through taxidermists who partner with the DNR or by dropping off deer heads at self-service CWD sampling stations. Hunters can also use mail-in kits, dropping by one of the DNR-staffed sampling stations or making appointments at area wildlife offices within CWD zones.

Minnesota has the following deer seasons:

Archery: September 17th through December 31st

Youth and early antlerless hunt: October 20th through October 23rd.

Firearms season: Opens November 5th and runs for nine days in zone two and three and 16 days in zone one.

Muzzleloader: November 26th through December 11th.
