(KNSI) – St. Cloud Hospital is the first in the world to use a revolutionary procedure to remove a heart tumor without open heart surgery.

A heart and vascular team from CentraCare Health used EchoPixel 4D hologram technology to guide them to the tumor bouncing around a patient’s heart. The team then used an AlphaVac catheter to suction it out. Officials say the operation took about 20 minutes.

“This is going to change our standard of care in a pretty quantum leap,” said Cardiologist Wade Schmidt, MD. “We now have the experience and the technology to treat a whole different population of patients.”

Doctors say the procedure shows a minimally invasive approach can be used to produce the same outcomes as major surgery. CentraCare says the method reduces the risk and recovery time for the patient.
