(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources warns boaters of dropping water levels on lakes and rivers. Officials say the lakes dropping fastest have streams or rivers running through them.

DNR Lieutenant Mike Martin says there are a couple of spots in central Minnesota to keep an eye on.

“The Mississippi River level is dropping and the horseshoe chain level is dropping. And anytime that you have impoundments like Little Rock Lake or the Horseshoe Chain of Lakes, you need to start being more aware because there’s just numerous obstructions.”

He says the dangers lie just below the surface.

“Sandbars, points of land that come out into the water, the boulders are starting to become either out of the water or very close to the surface of the water, especially on the Mississippi.”

Martin also reminds boaters to be on the lookout for sunken logs.

He advises anyone with a prop motor to be cautious on the Mississippi River between Sartell’s Dam and Blanchard Dam west of Royalton. He says other bodies of water are about average for this time of year.
