(KNSI) – When the Saint Cloud State Men’s Hockey Team opens the season in October, one prominent debut will be happening off the ice.
For the first time in over three decades, there is a new public address announcer at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Jason Bryant is a Virginia native and now calls the Twin Cities area home, but he is no stranger to Saint Cloud State University.
“The school itself was not a mystery. In fact, I’ve got family that live in Avon.”
Bryant runs Mat Talk Online, a podcast website which focuses on amateur wrestling. He has covered the NCAA Division Two Championships, where the Huskies are usually quite successful. Bryant says he is on a first-name basis with coach Steve Costanzo. Wrestling also provided a connection between Bryant and SCSU Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications Andrew Melroe. Melroe worked with the wrestling team at the University of Missouri in a past job.
Bryant is taking over following the retirement of Chuck Clausen after 32 seasons. Bryant says he is aware he is filling big shoes, but he isn’t necessarily nervous about it.
“I think the benefit I will have in this situation is I haven’t heard him in a game situation. So I don’t know what — other than, you know, we know about ‘The Woo.’ That was something that everybody talks about already. But I can’t copy a style I’ve never heard. When I say something on the mic for the first time it’s going to be something that is uniquely mine because I have no baseline.”
Bryant has public address experience in amateur wrestling at the collegiate and Olympic levels.
