(KNSI) — As iPads are used more and more in place of traditional cash registers, it seems everyone is adding a tip function to the checkout process.
Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman says if you’re just buying a product, don’t feel compelled. “They flip the iPad over and it starts with 25%. You’ve grabbed something, put it on the counter and then they ask you if you’d like to tip that’s strictly up to you, [or] you’re standing at a counter, someone turns around, hands you a bottle of soda, it’s very difficult to leave 25% when everybody is watching their budget.”
She says, “Unless you want to, I don’t want you to feel the pressure,” adding that tipping is still important, and people should add only what they can afford but save your cash for those providing a service.
According to the University of South Carolina’s College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management, tipping pre-tax on a restaurant check is usually fine. At a bar, experts say to leave $1 for a beer and $2 for a cocktail. If you order bar food or the service was exceptional, adding 20% is standard. Tipping for a ride share, at least $2 per ride for an Uber or Lyft, but 15 to 20% for a cab. At a hotel, plan on $2 to $3 for housekeeping. If you have kids or pets in the room, add a couple more. Fifteen percent for the nail or hair salon is the going rate.
