(KNSI) – The St. Cloud city hall building is coming down next week.

The building has stood on the corner of Highway 23/Division Street and 4th Avenue South for the last 98 years, but, Mayor Dave Kleis says all good things must come to an end.

“It’s kind of an end of an era but a new beginning over in the Lake George area where the new city hall is.”

Kleis says the old city hall is being torn down to make way for a redevelopment project.

“The building has been sold and it will be a Bremmer bank and have a future opportunity for a coffee shop and restaurant.”

St. Cloud renovated the former Tech High School in the Lake George neighborhood and turned it into the new city hall.

Preparation for demolition started this week. Most of the building will come down on Monday and Tuesday, with clean-up taking place the rest of the week. The left lane on eastbound Highway 23 will be closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday due to work on the site.

The former city hall building started as a junior high school in 1926. The school was turned into city hall in 1984 and was used until January 2022.
