(KNSI) — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory as a blast of hot air sweeps across central Minnesota and beyond.
The advisory is in effect Monday, July 18th, from noon to 8:00 p.m. Temperatures will be in at least the upper 90s, and dewpoints will be in the high 60s pushing heat index values into the low triple digits. Normal temperatures for this time of the year are in the low 80s, but the Climate Prediction Center says there is an excellent chance Minnesota will see above normal temperatures through the end of the month.
Forecasters say to take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside; when possible, reschedule strenuous activities, and know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. During extremely hot and humid weather, your body’s ability to cool itself is challenged. A body heating too rapidly or losing too much fluid or salt due to dehydration or sweating could result in heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Wearing light, loose-fitting clothes, staying hydrated, and spending time in the shade can help.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments to reduce risk during outdoor work. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shady location.
