(KNSI) – School districts around St. Cloud say they are still in desperate need of tutors as students are falling behind in crucial subjects.

Remote learning and other issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have students two to four months behind on reading and math, according to officials. They say students who work with tutors make up more than a year’s worth of progress.

In early June, District 742 put out a call for 26 tutors to help preschool and elementary kids with their reading, math, and early learning skills, but only found two. Sartell-St. Stephen and Sauk Rapids-Rice school districts say they are in the same boat.

To be a tutor, no teaching experience is needed. All tutors receive a stipend every two weeks, plus up to $4,500 to pay for college tuition or student loans. Many tutors also qualify for benefits like free individual health insurance and childcare assistance. Those 55 or older may gift their education award to their child, grandchild, stepchild, or foster child.

Reading and math corps tutors are trained and serve 35, 25, or 18 hours a week. Tutors will work with students starting in August through June 2023.
