(KNSI) — A Brooklyn Center man has been indicted on two counts of wire fraud for falsely claiming a $300,000 loss due to a politically motivated attack.
Denis Molla told police that in September of 2020, someone set his trailer on fire because he had a Trump flag displayed. He said the fire spread to two pickup trucks and a detached garage and claimed he had Biden 2020, Black Lives Matter, and Antifa graffiti spray painted on his garage door. Investigators say Molla started his property on fire and spray-painted the graffiti himself.
According to court documents, Molla submitted multiple insurance claims seeking coverage for the damage to his garage, camper, vehicles, and residence caused by the fire. When Molla’s insurance company denied some of those claims, Molla submitted written complaints to the insurance company claiming that it was defrauding him and threatened to report the company to the Department of Commerce and the Attorney General. Molla also created and allowed others to create two GoFundMe accounts to benefit Molla and his family. Molla submitted more than $300,000 in fraudulent insurance claims, receiving approximately $61,000 from his insurance company. Molla also received more than $17,000 from individual donors via GoFundMe.
He has since been released from jail.
