(KNSI) – United States Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the new director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons on Tuesday, and she has Central Minnesota ties.
Collette Peters is a 1993 graduate of the College of Saint Benedict with a degree in psychology. She went on to obtain a master’s in criminal justice at the University of Denver.
Peters is currently the director of the Oregon Department of Corrections, a position she has held for the past decade. She specializes in rehabilitation. From 2009 to 2012 she ran the Oregon Youth Agency, which works with children and young adults who committed a crime before they were 18.
Peters takes over the federal system on August 2nd. It consists of over 100 prisons and houses 150,000 inmates.
