(KNSI) — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says a 46-year-old Cass Lake man was arrested in connection to a drive-by shooting last year.

William Headbird is charged with second-degree murder drive-by shooting after police say 34-year-old Diego Gaska was gunned down while standing in a yard outside a house party in Cass Lake on July 5th, 2021. According to the criminal complaint, Gaska was shot once in the chest after a verbal altercation at the party.

Investigators say the gunfire came from a car that belonged to Headbird. He claimed to be drunk and didn’t know where his car was, but about a month later, his car was found covered in debris and partially dismantled on property allegedly belonging to someone he was once related to. Headbird was connected to the car via DNA inside the driver’s door.

Headbird was arrested in Grand Rapids, Minnesota on Friday. He is due in court Tuesday.
