(KNSI) — St. Cloud area Special Olympic athletes are planning on playing a role when the national championships come to the Twin Cities in 2026.

Tara Kardong recently won a title at the state swim meet and said she wants to participate in the national games in four years.

“It is exciting. I definitely plan on being there, hopefully as an athlete, but if not, as a volunteer.”

Tara was working with a group of Special Olympic Athletes serving dinner at St. Cloud’s 4th of July Fireworks show. The Special Olympic team has been serving dinners during the 4th for ten years.

Granite City Rocks Special Olympic Coach Marie Kigin says they hope to send a squad to the Twin Cities in 2026.

“For them to be able to participate in Minnesota would be awesome. But if not, as you can see, they love to volunteer. So, we’d get a crew down there to volunteer if not participating.”

The team has sent athletes to prior national championships over the last few national games in Orlando, Seattle, and New Jersey. For more information on helping the team, click here.
