(KNSI) – USAxe is prepping to host its first-ever Axe and Field Games on Wednesday, July 13th. The goal of the competition is to marry the niche skill of axe throwing, something that has become increasingly popular in recent years, with general athleticism. Niki Knight says it will be interesting to find out which set of abilities comes out on top.
The Axe and Field Games will have four separate events. The first was revealed earlier this week. Knight says, “The one that we have released so far is going to be the ‘Long Shot,’ which is a double rotation from 22 feet. Traditionally you throw one rotation from 12 feet.”
Two others are soon to be unveiled, including an event that uses knives, tactical shovels, and other instruments. The last event won’t be known to competitors until they have advanced to the Axe and Field finals.
Knight promises a test of stamina and quickness. She says, “Normally, [in] axe throwing you have your time to be calm and collected. This one is going to have some speed elements, some mental focus in there, some strategy of figuring out, ‘Okay, I have this many seconds left, I’m gonna go for this, [or] go for that.'”
Some of axe throwing’s best have already registered for the event. They’ll be in the state for a broadcast competition. Knight says, “The people that we have confirmed are people who are going to be going to the US Open, and that is going to be televised on ESPN in Minneapolis [on the 17th]. So, we have some of our sponsored athletes who are all former World Champions.”
Registration is $50. USAxe expects around 50 people to take part. If you would like to sign up, visit the group’s Facebook page. The competition will be held at the group’s Veteran’s Drive location.
