(KNSI) — Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin will be sentenced Thursday in federal court after pleading guilty to violating George Floyd’s civil rights.
Prosecutors asked Judge Paul Magnuson last month to sentence Chauvin to 25 years in prison with five years of supervised release as part of the plea agreement Chauvin entered in December. Standard sentencing guidelines called for 20 to 25 years. Without the plea deal, Chauvin was facing a life sentence.
He is already serving a 22-and-a-half-year sentence after being found guilty of murder and manslaughter in April 2021.
Three other former Minneapolis police officers were convicted of federal civil rights violations earlier this year. No sentencing date has been set for them.
