(KNSI) – Crackdowns are happening to prevent excessive speeding in the St. Cloud area. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety says summer is always the deadliest season on state roads. It’s warm and the pavement is dry, but using a lead foot remains dangerous.
Officials say obeying the speed limit, especially in construction work zones is the easiest way to reverse a worrisome trend. There were more auto accident fatalities in Minnesota in 2021 than in any year since 2003.
Through June 19th, deaths are down by over 40% but they remain above the pre-pandemic average.

Stearns County Attorney Janelle Kendall says excessive speeding is on the radar of local law enforcement and there have been several targeted enforcement actions aimed at curbing the reckless behavior. She says crackdowns will continue through the summer.
