(KNSI) – Four Stearns County women are finalists for the Princess Kay of the Milky Way competition. At 20 years old, the oldest of the group is Alex Christen from Sauk Centre. She says she first tried out for a nomination as COVID hit and she quickly realized that she owed it to herself to come back in more normal times.
“Our first year was a little bit weird because of COVID. And then my second year when we were actually out and about, getting to promote dairy and getting to be in the community and talking to people, I found that I absolutely loved it.”
Christen says the interview process features a lot of biographical questions, allowing her a chance to tell her personal story. There’s more to it than that, though. Christen says the next most common set of inquiries focuses on the industry and how best to promote it.
When Christen is asked which dairy product is hardest to advocate for, she surprisingly picks a dessert. “Frozen yogurt. Because a lot of times we like to tell people that frozen yogurt is a healthier alternative to ice cream, but at a lot of events they have us handing out ice cream.”
Christen says people pick up on the mixed message.
