(KNSI) – Minnesota power companies say they are ready to keep the air conditioners on with scorching temperatures moving in this weekend and next week. Temperatures are expected to be at or near 100 degrees on Sunday and Monday.

Xcel Energy Spokesman John Marshal has reassuring words for concerned customers.

“Xcel, in Minnesota, has 1.3 million customers and a lot of generation plants. So, there is lots of layers of redundancy. And the entire system is built for these hot stretches, because we’re what’s called a summer peaking utility.”

He has some simple tricks to help keep your home cool and your electric bill down.

“Just some common sense items. Close the blinds during the day to keep that cool air in. Have your ceiling fans running counterclockwise so you have cooler air that’s circulating a little bit better and then lastly, upgrade that thermostat if you still have an old school one.”

He also recommends checking your AC unit to ensure the coils are clean and nothing is blocking or clogging up the AC.
