(KNSI) — A St. Paul man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly shot at another driver on Interstate 94 in Monticello earlier this month.

Police were called to the Perkins Restaurant in Monticello just before 4:00 p.m. on June 8th and spoke with a man who said he was driving west on I-94 near the Fallon Avenue bridge and moved into the right lane to pass some cars in the left lane. He said an SUV was driving alongside him for a few seconds, and when he looked over, the driver pointed a gun at him and fired three shots.

The Minnesota State Patrol tracked down footage from Department of Transportation cameras in the area. Investigators say the video shows the driver of a white Lexus driving aggressively toward the victim’s car, which stops just before the Highway 25 exit on I-94, and the driver of the SUV continues going westbound.

The man provided a partial license plate and description of the driver to police. An advanced search showed the SUV was registered to 40-year-old Lee Sone of St. Paul. The victim positively identified Sone from a photo lineup, allegedly telling police, “That is him. No doubt in my mind.”

Investigators tracked Sone down on June 9th using cellular GPS data obtained through a search warrant and arrested him in the area where the shooting happened.

The criminal complaint says the bullets were fired from a .45 caliber handgun. One shot hit the A-pillar of the driver’s door near the mirror, shattering the front driver’s side window. A bullet hole was also discovered approximately eight inches above the front wheel well. The bullet traveled through the vehicle to the passenger side fender. Both bullets were recovered from the car.

Sone has been charged with second-degree assault, drive-by shooting, and a weapons violation. The criminal complaint says Sone was previously convicted of third-degree assault making him ineligible to possess a firearm. He was also previously convicted of gang-related crimes.

The investigation is ongoing.

Bail was set at $350,000 without conditions and $200,000 with. Sone is due back in court on June 21st.
