(KNSI) – This week’s heat may be just the right thing for the plants in your yard. Nursery owner Tom Woods says the cool, wet spring halted development and sizzling temperatures can serve as a catalyst.

“They’ll come through this heat well. Really, with the heat coming on the plants are gonna start growing a little bit faster, too.”

If the hot conditions continue for a while, or we hit a dry patch Woods says just be observant about which parts of your yard might need the most attention.

“If that plant is in all-day sun, it’s going to dry out a lot faster. If it’s on the north side of the house, it might not dry out as fast.”

Woods says to give shrubs and flowers and other flora a shot or two of water per day, above and beyond what they might get from the sprinkler. He says natural rainfall is best but the hose is an adequate substitute in the short run.

Potted plants and vegetables may need more moisture than others. For veggies, Woods says now is the time to put down mulch to help retain moisture. He says grass clippings work as does organic straw, which is sold at his business, Woods Farmer Seed and Nursery.
