(KNSI) — Law enforcement agencies from across the state cited almost 1,800 unbelted drivers during a special enforcement campaign.

Officers, deputies, and Minnesota state troopers reported 1,798 seat belt citations and 69 child restraint citations during the two-week statewide seat belt campaign, including extra patrols and awareness efforts. Seventy-six of those were in the state patrol’s St. Cloud district. Another 20 came from the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office. The Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office stopped an unbuckled driver with two children in the back seat, ages four and six, who were not properly restrained.

Through June 5th of this year, there have been 35 unbelted drivers who died in crashes. Officials say that’s 13% lower than last year, but it’s 13% higher than in 2020 and 59% higher than in 2019.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety coordinates the enforcement, education, and awareness campaign with funding provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
