(KNSI) – Minnesota’s best high school sharpshooters are gathering for the world’s largest trap shooting competition.
The nine-day event began on Monday at the Alexandria Shooting Park. Officials say around 7,900 shooters from 329 high school teams are competing.
Dozens of teams from central Minnesota are at the 2022 Minnesota State High School Clay Target League Championships. Albany, Annandale, Apollo, Becker, Big Lake, Cathedral, Foley, Holdingford, Melrose, Paynesville, ROCORI, Royalton, Saint Cloud Tech, Sartell, Sauk Centre and Sauk Rapids-Rice are all competing.
Organizers say the league’s priorities are safety, fun, and marksmanship. There hasn’t been one reported injury since the start of the league in 2001. Each shooter must complete firearm safety certification before participation.
Statewide, 11,792 shooters from 400 high schools competed this season. Officials say the league is one of Minnesota’s largest high school sports, with more participants than Boy’s and Girl’s High School Hockey combined.
