(KNSI) – Minnesota livestock farmers should begin collecting necessary documentation now for an upcoming application period. Operators in every central Minnesota county are eligible for up to $7,500 per farm for drought relief.

The window is expected to be opened by mid-June, with submissions taking place on the Minnesota Department of Agriculture website. Officials are warning that the period will be short, most likely 10-12 days, which could pose a problem for applicants who wait until filing to gather appropriate paperwork.

The payments are meant to aid farmers impacted by the severe drought that ravaged the state last year. The Minnesota legislature has appropriated $8.1 million for the effort.
