(KNSI) – Sartell-St. Stephen busted out their light blue uniforms for the 8AAAA Championship Game, matching the sky in Cold Spring. Fittingly, they were able to put it on cruise control, playing in perfect summer driving weather. They ran away from the Rogers High School Royals.
The Sabres took the crown with a 9-1 win, which capped off a sectional to remember. The team entered as a six seed and that meant stiff competition from the opening round. It didn’t phase them. On Tuesday, May 31st, they bombed #3 Elk River, 10-3. A week ago, Sartell knocked off the #2 Royals on the road, 6-4. On Tuesday, they were at the #1 St. Michael-Albertville Knights, winning 5-2.
Sartell relied on early offense in most of those games, a formula they went back to on Thursday. They pushed across two in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from Steven Brinkerhoff and an RBI by Blake Haus.
Rogers was able to load the bases in the top of the third, but Sabres starter Jalen Vorpahl slithered out of the jam unscathed. The stranded runners marked a turning point as Sartell-St. Stephen plated five runs in the next half inning to extend the lead to a commanding 7-0 margin.
Sartell’s next game is in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday, June 14th. The Minnesota State High School League has not released brackets yet. All four games in the round will happen at CHS Field in St. Paul. Potential start times include 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.
