(KNSI) – The Sabres went on a charge early in Tuesday’s Section 8AAAA semi-final, locking up their spot in Thursday’s championship round. Sartell-St. Stephen defeated St. Michael-Albertville, the one seed, by a 5-2 margin.
The offense struck early, scoring three in the top of the first and two more in the third inning. Most of the damage came off the bat of third baseman Kade Lewis. He ended up 3-3, plus an intentional walk. The free pass came after he smashed two home runs. A blast to center and no-doubter to right both plated two. Sartell’s other RBI came on a one-out double from Blake Haus in the opening frame.
The home team was able to push across two runs in the third, let a golden opportunity slip by in the fourth that featured runners on the corners and nobody out, and then the bats quieted to a whimper in the late innings. Sartell starter Wesley Johnson retired the last nine men he faced.
The win gets Sartell to 3-0 in the postseason. They play tomorrow in Cold Spring, at 4:30 and 7:00 if needed. The Sabres will take on the winner of tonight’s elimination bracket contest between Rogers and St. Michael-Albertville.
They will go into the matchup with plenty of confidence. Sartell-St. Stephen has beaten both of those teams already in postseason play.
