(KNSI) – Searles on Fifth Ave in St. Cloud announced that it closed permanently on Tuesday.
Owners Darin and Michelle Agnew say disruptions in the business early on and health issues drove the decision to close.
According to the restaurant’s Facebook page, they held on as long as possible, but the recently voted down Federal Restaurant Revitalization grant sealed their fate. Searles on Fifth Ave opened in February 2020, just three weeks before the start of COVID-19 lockdowns.
The Agnews said, due to the repeated shutdowns and breached contacts from being closed, the restaurant wasn’t able to regain its financial footing. Because the restaurant hadn’t been open for at least six months before the pandemic, they were also not eligible for most assistance.
Darin has suffered at least one heart attack and Michelle was in a car accident just 19 days after the couple bought the building, suffering a brain injury.
They finished by thanking their customers.
The refurbished historic 1886 building, as well as elements of the business package, are for sale.
