(KNSI) – A special refiling period called in the Stearns County Third District commissioners race was a success. The period covered five days, ending Monday night. Six new candidates will be on the ballot for the August primary, joining Jeff Bertram who filed in May before the original deadline had passed.

Incumbent Jeff Mergen was initially set to run again for a seat he has held since 2010. On June 1st he surprised many by filing to withdraw. That left the race with only one candidate. Any election where a person bows out must have at least three other people vying for the seat, or a special filing period is required by state law.

The full slate of candidates is below.

– Tina Barak
– Barry M. Belknap
– Jeff Bertram
– Daniel W. Goebel
– Kelly Guest
– Walter M. Moorhouse
– Charles E. Ward

The primary is scheduled for Tuesday, August 9th, which will winnow the race down to two contestants. The third district is comprised of the southeastern portion of Stearns County, including Saint Augusta and Collegeville.
