(KNSI) – Thousands of girls will lace up their sneakers and take to regional race sites across Minnesota this weekend. The host organization expects 2,600 girls in grades 3-8 to sign up, plus an adult running buddy for all participants.

Girls on the Run Minnesota recently expanded statewide. They operate locally at sites in St. Cloud and Sartell. Those chapters are hosting a run, along with Duluth and some other locations outside of the Twin Cities.

The organization aims to teach young girls lessons about improving their social and emotional skills, how to deal with adversity and trauma, and other qualities that will help them through adolescence and into adulthood. Girls on the Run relies on physical activity to impart those lessons. The program lasts for eight weeks.

The race will be untimed. Walking, skipping, dancing, and running are all encouraged.
