(KNSI) — The Republican endorsed candidate for governor says Minnesotans are overtaxed and they’ve been failed by the current administration.

Dr. Scott Jensen says Governor Tim Walz failed to act in time during the 2020 riots and get meaningful legislation passed.

“We’ve seen over and over again, he freezes. He froze when it came to the riots on the streets of Minneapolis. He froze when he wasn’t willing to respond to the press, even on Sunday. You could see it on Twitter, where journalists were saying, ‘why isn’t the governor available to us?'”

Jensen says lawmakers left the State Capitol on Monday without passing a meaningful public safety bill, education proposals, a transportation package, a bonding bill or tax reform. He added they also failed to decide on how to use a record budget surplus, saying he despises that people are using the word surplus. “It’s theft. The people in Minnesota are responsible to provide the dollars necessary to balance the budget. They did that. And then all of a sudden there’s $12 billion. I’m sorry, that’s got to go back to the taxpayers.”

At the end of the session, legislative leaders and the governor agreed to $4 billion in tax relief, $4 billion in spending, and $4 billion on the bottom line.

Jensen doesn’t like spending an additional $4 billion on government just because the state has the funds. He says Minnesota had more than a 10% increase in the last budget cycle, which he argues is out of control.

Walz says he’s not opposed to calling lawmakers back to St. Paul for a special session to pass legislation and spending that was agreed upon before the final gavel Sunday night.
