(KNSI) – Two St. Cloud Technical & Community College (SCTCC) students are heading to a national competition after taking first place in the Minnesota SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference.
Nick Lanham from Brainerd won in the Electrical Construction competition and Alec Schrupp of Glencoe took first place in HVAC/R. Both are invited to the National Leadership and Skills Conference, held June 20-24 in Atlanta.
Each SCTCC program was able to send up to six students to compete at the state level. The Automotives and Medium/Heavy Truck programs also sent post-secondary enrollment option (PSEO) students to compete in the high school-level competition.
The state championships bring together nearly 1,000 students to compete in more than 80 trade, technical, and leadership fields. The competitions are run with help from industry leaders, trade associations and labor organizations. The state competition was held April 7-10 in Minneapolis.

Auto Body: Noah Scherping, Albany, 3rd in Refinishing.
Automotives: Joe Baratta, St. Cloud, 2nd; PSEO student Jon Thayer, Sartell, 3rd in the high school level competition.
Culinary: Mercedes Wilson, Sartell, 3rd in Culinary Arts.
Electrical Construction Wiring: Stephen Grogg, Waite Park, 2nd.
Industrial Motor Control: Ryan Madsen, Elk River, 2nd and Pierce Heinze, Sauk Centre, 3rd.
HVAC/R: Jasper Burma, Milaca, 2nd; Joe Skroch, Foley, 3rd.
Medium/Heavy Truck PSEO: student Warren Schwieger, NowThen, 2nd Diesel Technology competition.
