(KNSI) — The nationwide formula shortage brought about by the closure of the Abbott Nutrition plant, which manufactured Similac, one of the top formula brands on the market, has some parents panicking to find ways to feed their babies.
Dr. Dave Smith with Sartell Pediatrics says because of the Similac shortage, “then all of a sudden that became that there were shortages of the others because people were, instead of using the Similac, now they’re using the more generic formulas, and Gerber, those sorts of things.”
Parents searching for Similac may have to switch brands for the time being, and the best thing to do is to “try and find a formula that’s similar to the one you’re using. So if you’re using a Similac product, to find an Enfamil product or a generic product.”
Dr. Smith says if a baby requires a special formula, most of the brands have something similar. “most of the kids can tolerate the formulas if they don’t have any sort of allergies. If your doctor hasn’t told you before that [baby has] a casein allergy or a whey allergy or that they need a specialized formula, most of the formulas should be fine.”
Experts say there may be some gassiness as the transition is made, but tummy troubles should ease.
Abbott Nutrition, which manufactures Similac, had to close a plant in Michigan after a national recall following the discovery of contaminated formula.
