(KNSI) – 2,843 motorists were cited for distracted driving during an April crackdown statewide. Agencies at the local, county, and state levels participated.

Commuters locally fared worse than other parts of the state. “In Wright County, a driver admitted to snapchatting their friends while speeding away from the job they just quit.”

On a cumulative basis, Minnesota State Patrol for the Saint Cloud area issued 157 citations. That compares to 111 in Duluth and 100 in Rochester. Only District 3100 (near Virginia in the Iron Range) had more on an absolute basis outside of the heavily populated Twin Cities metro.

Law enforcement says distracted driving could be a matter of life and death. In Minnesota during 2021, 27 traffic fatalities were classified as being caused by distractions.

Police remind motorists that the state has a law banning the use of cell phones except through a hands-free system.
