(KNSI) — Anglers are packing their boats for the big fishing opener weekend, and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ recreation safety outreach coordinator Lisa Dugan says it’s crucial to remember life jackets.
“If you’re fishing or paddling on open water right now, it means that water temperatures are dangerously cold. And if you do fall overboard the time that it takes you to get out of the water is crucial. By always wearing a life jacket, you’re setting yourself up for a safe trip and ensuring you make it home safely at the end of the day.”
Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Brent Grewe says it’s important that people wear their life jacket, not just have it in the boat. “The water is still very cold just went out on some lakes across the state. It’s very, very cold still, so it needs to take all the precautions necessary. Every year people fall into the water into the cold water, and they survive because they are wearing a life jacket. It’s very, very important.”
Minnesota law requires one U.S. Coast Guard approved, properly sized, and easily accessible life jacket for each person on the boat. All children under ten are required to wear an approved life jacket when the boat is underway.
The DNR says each year, about 30% of fatal boating accidents happen during the cold-water period.
If you fall in, experts say, don’t panic. Get your breathing under control, and then make a plan for getting to safety.
